Why Aveda? 6 things you didn’t know about Aveda

15-10-2020

Many customers who enter our salon don’t leave without taking an Aveda product with them. Aveda is hot. But why? What makes Aveda so special? And who is Aveda, actually? You’ll read it here:

6 things you didn’t know about Aveda

1. Meaning of the name

How do you pronounce the name Aveda? Small guess: aaveedaa? Wrong! You pronounce it as ah-vay-der. In Sanskrit, this means “knowledge of the whole.” The founder of Aveda, Horst Rechelbacher, was inspired by Ayurveda—the ancient healing art from India—and other indigenous wisdoms that paid much attention to life and well-being on earth.

2. Where is Aveda’s headquarters?

The headquarters is in Minnesota, a few kilometers from Minneapolis. How the founder ended up here is quite a special story. When Horst was once in Minneapolis, he was involved in a car accident. During his rehabilitation, he decided to settle there as a hairdresser and started his own salon. Aveda was officially founded in 1978 and, after rapid growth, now has branches all over the world.

3. The first product

The clove shampoo—created in a bathtub or sink. Okay, the recipe has changed a bit due to changing regulations, but it remains an iconic favorite.

4. Love for the planet

One of Aveda’s goals: making our planet better. They do this, among other things, by:

  • Creating products that have zero impact on the earth’s climate (like our air control hairspray);
  • supporting sustainable wind energy to compensate for the CO2 associated with the production, transport, and use of control force to ensure it has no impact on the earth’s climate;
  • using 100% recycled PET bottles;
  • not testing on animals;
  • using responsible packaging: they consist of 90% post-consumer recycled fiber (PCF) (paper that has already been discarded).

5. Thicker-looking hair? We know the secret ;)

A secret is usually meant to stay secret, but we’re happy to share this one! The secret is... Amla! A vitamin C-rich herb—also known as the Indian gooseberry—that is used to make hair appear thicker.

6. The proud bee brigade

At Aveda’s headquarters—as you now know, in Minnesota—live five colonies of honeybees. And that’s more than 100,000 bees! Aveda finds it important to commit to the protection and preservation of their habitats. In the natural habitats, certified by the National Wildlife Federation, the bees live in a true paradise of 24 hectares with plenty of water, food, vegetation, and space to raise young. And this space is, of course, set up and maintained sustainably: no pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, or insecticides.

Aveda’s mission

Aveda’s mission is as follows: "Our mission at Aveda is to care for the world we live in, from the products we make to the ways in which we give back to society. At Aveda, we strive to set an example for environmental leadership
